T-shirts with logos, slogans, or images are especially problematic because they can distract from the seriousness of the ceremony. Tank tops or sleeveless shirts are also discouraged, as they often appear too relaxed and fail to convey the dignity expected at such an event.
Instead, choose a collared shirt, blouse, or simple button-down. For men, pairing a long-sleeved shirt with trousers or a suit jacket creates a respectful appearance. For women, a modest blouse paired with a skirt or pants is appropriate. Even if the family specifies a “casual” dress code, casual should still mean neat, subdued, and respectful.
3. Shirts With Bold Prints or Graphic Designs
Another type of shirt to avoid is anything with loud prints or graphic designs. Hawaiian shirts, animal prints, and busy patterns may be fun for vacations or parties, but they clash with the somber tone of a funeral. Shirts featuring logos, pop culture characters, or humorous graphics are also inappropriate, as they risk offending grieving family members or appearing insensitive.
At a funeral, clothing should be simple and understated. Solid colors or very subtle patterns, such as small pinstripes, are acceptable. If in doubt, always select simplicity over self-expression. Remember, the focus should be on honoring the life of the deceased, not showcasing your wardrobe.
