– 1 tablespoon Shaoxing rice wine (optional, adds depth of flavor; substitute dry sherry)
– 1 tablespoon brown sugar
– 1 teaspoon five-spice powder (or a blend of star anise, cinnamon, cloves, Sichuan peppercorns, and fennel seeds)
– 1 teaspoon ground ginger
– 2 cloves garlic, minced
– 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
– Salt and pepper to taste
– Optional: 1-2 bay leaves for added flavor
