I had been eagerly awaiting our fifth wedding anniversary, picturing a candlelit dinner filled with laughter and warmth. I picked out my best outfit, reserved a table at our favorite spot, and sat by the door waiting for my husband to arrive.
But as the night dragged on, instead of his embrace, I received a short message that crushed me: “Busy, can’t make it.” My joy quickly gave way to disappointment, then to unease. Something about his absence gnawed at me, and I couldn’t quiet the sinking feeling in my chest.
The next morning, still unsettled, I decided to follow him discreetly. My pulse quickened as I saw him walk into a quiet, nearly empty diner. Through the glass, I prepared myself for heartbreak, half-expecting to see another woman by his side.
But what I found was entirely different — he sat alone in a corner booth, papers scattered across the table and a small gold-wrapped box resting near his hand. Relief washed over me, though confusion lingered.
